111 വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുമ്പ്, കൃത്യമായ് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ 1908 June 30 നു തുംഗുസ്ക നദിക്കു സമീപം (North Siberia) ആകാശത്തു ഒരു ഭീമന്‍ സ്ഫോടനം ദൃശ്യമായി. യുദ്ധമാണെന്ന് പലരും അതിനെ തെറ്റിദ്ധരിച്ചു. ആരും മരിച്ചതായ് അന്ന് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്‌ ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും, 2000 sqkm പരിധിയിലുള്ള കാടു മുഴുവന്‍ ആ സ്ഫോടനത്തിന്‍റെ ഫലമായുണ്ടായ ആഘാതത്തില്‍ നശിച്ചു. അത്ര ഭയാനകമായ പ്രകമ്പനം ആയിരുന്നു അന്നവിടെ നടന്നത്.
19 വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം ആണ് ആ സംഭവത്തിലേക്ക് ആദ്യത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ പര്യവേക്ഷണം നടന്നത്, അതു ഒരു ഛിന്നഗ്രഹം പൊട്ടിത്തെറിച്ചതായിരുന്നു. സത്യത്തില്‍ ഭൂമിയുടെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തില്‍ എത്തുന്നതിനു എത്രയോ മുമ്പ് തന്നെ അതു കത്തിതീര്‍ന്നിരുന്നു. വായു ഘര്‍ഷണം ഇല്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ അതു ഭൂമിയില്‍ വന്നു പതിച്ചേനെ, ഒരു പക്ഷെ സകല ജീവജാലങ്ങളും അതോടെ ഇല്ലാതായേനെ.
എന്തായാലും അതേ പിന്നെ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്‍റെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ ഛിന്നഗ്രഹങ്ങളിലേക്കും വാല്നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളിലേക്കും ഒക്കെ തിരിഞ്ഞു.
അങ്ങനെ തുംഗുസ്ക സംഭവത്തിന്റെ വാര്ഷികമായ് June 30 ഇന്റര്‍ നാഷണല്‍ ആസ്റ്ററോയിഡ് ഡേ (ഛിന്നഗ്രഹദിനം) ആചരിക്കുന്നു. സൂര്യനെ ചുറ്റുന്ന ഈ പാറക്കൂട്ടങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള united nations ന്‍റെ educational പ്രോഗ്രാം ല്‍ ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള 192 രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ പങ്കു ചേരുന്നു.
